How to make an Hemingway Daiquiri

Hemingway daiquiri cocktail

The Hemingway Daiquiri, named after the famous author Ernest Hemingway, is a delicious variation of the classic Daiquiri (light rum, lime juice and sugar syrup) which has a few changes which link closely to the author himself. The ingredients are as followed for those of you who would like to attempt this historical cocktail:

How to Make a Hemingway Daiquiri:

  • Light rum (50ml)
  • Maraschino (1 barspoon)
  • Lime juice (20ml)
  • Grapefruit juice (20ml)

(Shake and fine strain this into a chilled martini glass and garnish with one maraschino cherry)

The reason for no sugar syrup like the classic Daiquiri was because Hemingway was in fact diabetic. He wrote about his struggles with diabetes when he was traveling around the US and the Caribbean. But, the origin of the Hemingway Daiquiri emerged when he was in Havana, Cuba (an appropriate place for some delicious rum Daiquiris). He was in the bar when he spotted some delicious Daiquiris lined up on the bar. He asked if he could try one and being the large, burly man he was, the bartender did not argue. Hemingway loved it but asked for one to be made with no sugar and with double rum. Not only did this make it a stronger drink, but it also apparently helped with restricting the hangover the next morning.

Hemingway would apparently drink these by the dozen. He once drank 17 of them in one night and wrote about how he felt the next morning saying he had no hangover and said that it was because of the sugar-free versions he was sinking the night before. However, the Hemingway Daiquiri even today is sometimes made with a quarter ounce of simple syrup to sweeten it up which just goes against the way Hemingway liked them. Not only was he diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, he had, all his life never liked sweet drinks. Also, the lower serving of rum of only 50ml would not live up to the double serving of rum Hemingway enjoyed in Havana. So, all in all, sadly the great man himself would probably not order a Hemingway Daiquiri, but instead would ask for something to be made a little stronger, and not as sweet.

Not to say that this drink doesn’t live up to the history and stories of the great man, it’s just that as time goes by, stories and history change and that is how we have ended up with the Hemingway Daiquiri today even though the man himself would maybe not choose to enjoy one.
